Toronto transit officials confirmed that a Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) student died Friday morning after jumping in front of a TTC subway train at Union Station, triggering a temporary shutdown of Canadaโs busiest transit hub and significant disruptions during the morning rush.

The incident occurred at approximately 8:45 a.m. on Line 1 (YongeโUniversity). In a post shared on X, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) reported an โinjury on the tracks,โ prompting an immediate suspension of subway service in both directions between College and Osgoode stations. Union Station was temporarily closed as emergency crews responded.
The disruption extended beyond subway service. Streetcar routes 509 Harbourfront and 510 Spadina were suspended through Union Station, with vehicles bypassing the area and dropping off passengers near the ferry docks. TTC Senior Communications Advisor Susan Nguyen said shuttle buses were not deployed due to heavy downtown traffic, advising customers instead to transfer between the Yonge and University sides of Line 1 using available streetcar routes.
As a result of the shutdown, crowding was reported at major transfer points, including St. George and BloorโYonge stations, as commuters sought alternate routes. TTC staff and transit enforcement were deployed across affected stations to manage passenger flow and provide updates.
By shortly after 10:30 a.m., the TTC announced that full subway service on Line 1 had resumed. The transit agency has not released further details about the individual involved, pending notification of next of kin.
The incident underscores the profound impact such events have on families, communities, and the cityโs transit system.
